Diversity in Mardi Gras
Some of today's parades display the changes in celebrations. Predominately an African American Krewe, the Krewe of Zulu began in 1909 in New Orleans, La. Over the course of being an active Krewe, members met with controversy at the height of the Civil Rights movement, but continue to be a Mardi Gras favorite today. New Orleans is also home to two exclusively all-female Krewes-- Nyx & Muses.
